Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 78: You’ve Always Been Special

After chatting for a while, they turned off the lights and went to sleep.

When Su Ling opened her eyes, it was already past nine in the morning.

The basement has only one small window, which is now completely blocked and there's hardly any sunlight coming in. It's quiet without anyone disturbing, ensuring an unprecedented peaceful sleep.

Wang Pian and Luo Xiaobing were still asleep, probably cherishing this rare opportunity for a good rest.

To avoid disturbing them, Su Ling got up quietly.

Just as she finished tidying up the blanket, Wang Pian woke up.

"Sister Su Ling."

After their conversation yesterday, she had learned Su Ling's name.

"Why don't you sleep a little longer?" Su Ling asked in a hushed voice, afraid to wake Luo Xiaobing.

"We've already slept well enough. Normally, we get up at six, cook, clean, do laundry, and sun-dry the quilts. Being able to follow Sister Su Ling feels like being in heaven," Wang Pian replied with a lazy stretch and jumped up from the ground.

Luo Xiaobing also nodded gratefully.

"Sister Su Ling, me too."

Su Ling smiled and said, "Since you both had a good rest, let's tidy up, and then we can look for some ingredients to cook."

She reached for the door and noticed the sun was already shining brightly outside.

As soon as her hand was exposed, she felt the stinging of ultraviolet rays, so she quickly went back inside to get a mask and a cap.

Wang Yuanhang's figure in the distant ruins was nowhere to be seen.

On the ground, there were bloodstained trousers and a shoe, and judging by the amount of blood, Su Ling knew he must have been devoured by the zombies.

Then she noticed something strange. Apart from the bloodstains, there were four zombie skulls shattered on the ground.

Su Ling walked over to inspect and found that their neck vertebrae were all broken, indicating that they were killed by someone using gravity.

Suddenly, a figure flashed through Su Ling's mind.

"Sister Su Ling, there's still some oil left. How about stir-frying some rice? Is that okay?"

"Sure, you two take care of that."

Wang Pian's voice interrupted Su Ling's thoughts.

She wasn't a picky eater; as long as there was food, it was good enough for her.

Suddenly, she thought of her own Passat car.

Regrettably, the medical supplies were wasted, but now wasn't the time to go back. Returning at this moment would only make Li Xueying think she couldn't survive outside.

Lost in thought, she suddenly heard the revving of an engine, and in the blink of an eye, a white Land Rover appeared at the entrance.

Sheng Hongye hopped down from the car.

He still wore those camouflage pants, a peaked cap on his head and a leather belt clasped around his waist, giving off a touch of wildness.

"How did you know I was here?"

"Did you sleep well last night?"

Both of them spoke almost simultaneously.

Then they spoke again simultaneously.

"Very well."

"A lucky guess."

Su Ling instantly sealed her lips, an awkward tension lingering in the air.

"Actually, you didn't need to come here. Everything is fine on my end."

"Why do you have to pretend to be strong?"

Sheng Hongye frowned

"The base is spacious enough to accommodate all of you."

Su Ling smirked sarcastically. "So, you want me and my enemies to stay together? You have a responsibility towards Li Xueying, but I don't."

Sheng Hongye fell silent for a moment and looked up. "I will find another team for her, and the previous proposal won't be disregarded."

Su Ling's lips curled up. "Then let's talk when you find one."

"Su Ling."

Sheng Hongye stopped Su Ling.

He spoke with a serious tone, "Feng Weiwei escaped. As long as she's not found, the potential danger won't be eliminated. Lizhou is so big; there might be many hidden teams. I can't rest assured with you three girls staying outside."

Su Ling chuckled with self-deprecation. "It's just a former team member. Why are you so concerned?"

Sheng Hongye's gaze was intense. "You should know that, to me, you've always been special, different from others."

Su Ling was momentarily struck by his unreserved gaze.

She turned her face to the side, trying to hide her discomfort, and replied calmly, "Don't worry, if anyone in the team falls sick, I will still treat them."

Sheng Hongye quickly clarified, "That's not what I meant..."

Feeling guilty, Su Ling didn't want to hear the rest and cut him off, "It's getting late; it's time for us to eat. After that, we'll have to go search for supplies. You can go back now."

Sheng Hongye stood there without moving, gazing at Su Ling.

"I haven't eaten yet. Can I have a meal here?"

"No, you can't," Su Ling firmly refused.

"Both of our girls here don't like men, so you should go and eat elsewhere."

After saying this, Su Ling closed the door and went inside.

Outside, Sheng Hongye's face felt inexplicably a little hot.

No matter which identity he assumed, he was always pursued by women. However, in Su Ling's eyes, he seemed to be worth nothing.

His lips slightly curved, and his narrow, sharp eyes grew deeper in color.

Regardless, he would protect this woman.

Because to him, she held a special place.

A minute later, Sheng Hongye turned and got back into his car.

Inside, Wang Pian had already turned on the lights and started cooking rice.

Luo Xiaobing was using a cloth to wipe the room, quickly turning it from a pigsty to a completely different environment.

After eating some fried rice, the three got on Su Ling's RV.

Before leaving, Su Ling found two sticks and handed them to the others as weapons.

Both of them were venturing out to search for supplies for the first time, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement.

The city center had already been thoroughly searched, so Su Ling led them to a slightly remote area.

After learning about Luo Xiaobing's ability to communicate with animals, Su Ling paid special attention to them. However, despite searching thoroughly, they couldn't find a single ant.

This was indeed unusual.

Glancing at the eerie two-tone sky, an inexplicable sense of foreboding rose in Su Ling's heart.

Pushing the feeling aside, she continued searching for items. Suddenly, Wang Pian shouted with excitement.

"Sister Su Ling, I found a sealed pack of radish cubes!"

Luo Xiaobing chimed in, "Sister Su Ling, I found a can of wild vegetables!"

Seeing their joyful expressions, Su Ling gave them an approving nod.

"Well done! We won't have to settle for plain porridge tonight."

"Okay!"

They both nodded in agreement.

Just as they were about to speak, they heard a cold laugh from behind.

"You two little bitches think you can escape from my grasp?"

Turning around, they saw Feng Weiwei not far away, accompanied by two other men.

One was tall and thin, twirling a ball of wind under his feet.

The other wore glasses, and he was none other than the persistent Liu Yu.
