Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 77: Animal Communication Ability

Seeing Wang Yuanhang being beaten beyond recognition, Wang Pian finally caught her breath.

She couldn't help but hold onto Luo Xiaobing and burst into tears.

Su Ling stood by, her eyes also welling up with tears. Even in the apocalypse, she refused to believe that people couldn't survive without the opposite sex.

Seeing that the two of them had finally released their pent-up resentment, she slowly walked over, gently embraced them, and comforted them like children, saying, "It's alright now. from now on, I'll protect you both."

Luo Xiaobing clung to Su Ling, struggling to say, "Sister, I will follow you well in the future."

Wang Pian choked as she spoke, "Me too, I'll never let any man bully me again."

"Good, that's the spirit."

Su Ling comforted them, then untied Wang Yuanhang.

The three of them worked together to throw this scum outside the door.

By now, it was already dark, and Wang Yuanhang was covered in blood, he was bound to attract zombies. In any case, he had no chance of surviving.

To prevent the zombies from detecting the scent of blood inside the room, Su Ling found a nearly empty bottle of white wine and sprinkled it on the floor. She then wiped away the bloodstains and tossed the cloth outside.

After finishing all this, the three of them cooked some rice porridge.

Outside, the night had fallen.

As they were tidying up the bowls and chopsticks, the moaning of zombies could be heard from outside the door.

Wang Pian was instantly scared stiff, her face visibly pale.

Su Ling whispered, "It's okay, I used to live in this house, and the zombies can't get in."

Not long after, the roars grew louder, accompanied by the sound of hurried footsteps.

Curious, Su Ling went to the door and listened intently.

In a daze, it seemed like Su Ling heard the sound of fists hitting flesh.

It sounded like someone was fighting the zombies.

Could it be that Wang Yuanhang didn't die? Even if he survived, he couldn't possibly have the strength to fight the zombies.

Could there be other survivors?

Su Ling went to the small window but found it sealed shut from the outside with iron plates, making it impossible to see what was happening outside. She had no choice but to give up.

If someone knocked on the door, they could talk then.

They waited until late at night, but no knocking was heard, and the roars outside gradually quieted down.

Looking at Wang Pian and Luo Xiaobing holding hands and nervously looking outside, Su Ling chuckled. Her cold expression instantly melted away.

Her eyebrows curved like a crescent moon, making her look exceptionally beautiful.

Wang Pian couldn't help but stare for a moment and whispered, "Sister, you look really beautiful when you smile."

Su Ling patted their heads and smiled, saying, "You two are beautiful as well. Now, go to sleep early. Tomorrow, I'll take you to search for supplies."

However, Wang Pian wasn't sleepy at all; in fact, she was even excited.

She was a girl from the countryside, and because her family was poor, her parents always told her not to cause trouble or fight because they couldn't afford to pay for any damages.

Wang Pian remembered these words, which made her more timid and cowardly over time.

During her school days, she was often bullied by classmates, but she never dared to fight back because she feared having to pay for any damage caused. Over time, she developed this personality of being a pushover.

Even when Wang Yuanhang and his gang harmed her, she didn't dare to make a sound. Now that she had personally kicked that shameless guy out, she felt an indescribable sense of relief.

"Sister, I'm not sleepy. Can you chat with me?"

"Sure, what do you want to talk about?"

With admiration in her eyes, Wang Pian asked, "Before the apocalypse, Sister, were you also a very powerful woman?"

Powerful? Before the apocalypse, Su Ling was a cardiovascular surgeon, the head of the cardiovascular department, an honorary professor at Yunlan Medical College, and the vice-chairman of Lizhou Medical Association, among other titles.

She held a pile of titles, but ultimately, there was only one that mattered.

Doctor. She was just a doctor who treated and saved people.

So, in her view, she wasn't particularly powerful.

Like many doctors in white coats, she hoped to use her hands to minimize human suffering.

Little did she know that one day, these hands that held surgical knives would also have to wield guns and fight for survival and food.

She curled up the corners of her mouth, her smile tinged with a hint of self-mockery.

"I'm not powerful at all; I'm just an ordinary person."

Wang Pian looked at her curiously and shook her head, saying, "I don't believe it, sister, are you a secret agent for the country?"

Su Ling was amused by this silly girl.

Apart from her serious demeanor, she was nothing like a secret agent.

But it was just part of her professional demeanor.

Although being a doctor was also a service-oriented profession, it was quite different. If a doctor was too friendly, patients might find them frivolous, especially someone like Su Ling. After all, in everyone's perception, older doctors were always better than younger ones.

"How could I be a secret agent? I'm just a pretty ordinary doctor."

Wang Pian was somewhat surprised. "Sister, you're actually a doctor? Then... do you have the ability to heal?"

"No, I don't."

Su Ling shook her head; her ability was rather useless, so she didn't mention it.

"What about you two? Do you have any abilities?"

Wang Pian suddenly pointed at Luo Xiaobing. "I don't, but Xiaobing does. She's been keeping it a secret."

"Oh? What kind of ability is it?"

Su Ling became curious as well.

Luo Xiaobing blushed slightly and nudged Wang Pian with her elbow.

"Let's not talk about it; my ability is completely useless."

After a few conversations, her speech had become noticeably smoother compared to before.

The more she said this, the more intrigued Su Ling became.

"What is it, after all?"

Wang Pian suddenly burst into laughter. "Her ability is to communicate with small animals."

Su Ling looked at Luo Xiaobing in astonishment.

"Meaning... she can understand animal language?"

Luo Xiaobing nodded shyly and added, "Once, I was locked in a cage by Feng Weiwei, and I saw a rat. I was so scared that I screamed in fear and then I actually heard it say, 'Poor human, I'm just a rat, and I scared you like this. Pathetic.' At first, I thought I was hallucinating, but later, I realized that the mouse was really talking."

Wang Pian couldn't help but chuckle. "When Xiaobing said that at first, I didn't believe her. But later, she heard a cat talking, saying that Wang Yuanhang was beating up Xiaobing's dad, and it turned out to be true. That's when we believed her."

It seemed like Luo Xiaobing's ability awakened before her dad's death, which was quite early.

Su Ling smiled and said, "No, this ability is quite useful. We can use animals to find supplies."

Luo Xiaobing shook her head. "Since the apocalypse began, I've only seen a calico cat and a small rat. I don't know why, but it seems like animals have disappeared."

Su Ling thought about it and realized that it was indeed the case.

Throughout their journey, the only animals she encountered were winged shrimps, legged fish, and a mutated butterfly.

Something seemed off.

Usually, animals only go silent and hide during major disasters. Could it be... that another disaster was about to strike?
