Calliope Smith's eighteenth birthday wasn't going great, but at least getting yanked into a world of magic and monsters is a good way to ditch the police. Sure, people (and allergies, and magical accidents, and who knows what else) might be trying to kill her but if the choice is between learning magic and going back to Earth she'll deal with almost dying all the time. Is she a chosen one? It would be an odd choice, considering she has to frequently remind herself to be a good person. Is this just an accident? The letter from a mysterious benefactor promising magic and cash would imply otherwise. This is a story about an end of the world that happened, or didn't happen, or might happen. It's fine. Everything is fine. They already fixed it, it's not going to be a problem. Probably. It's also a story about trying to do the right thing while not really wanting to, and making friends when you're bad at it, and having fun despite being hunted by the goodguys and the badguys alike. It's a story about how everything is built on something else, and sometimes those things are broken. HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS IS THE STORY FOR ME? Fair question! Some things that might help you make that decision: The main character is flawed, and starts off underpowered.  This means that due to a combination of very impulsive decisions and being in over her head she's going to get into situations that should probably get her killed multiple times, and generally she'll get away with it. Sometimes there's plot reasons for this, and sometimes I just think it's fun. People getting out of situations in improbable or risky ways is something I enjoy in fiction. Likewise, sometimes she'll make a bad choice that will get her in trouble and I think that's fun too - having perfect characters that always act optimally or can immediately win every fight isn't a thing I enjoy writing. I've put a lot of thought into the worldbuilding, because I want it to be internally consistent and have some established rules for magic. That being said, some of the specific things that exist or that you can do in this world are pretty wild by real-world standards, because it's high fantasy with magic influencing everything. As the characters deal with powerful forces, the plot will get a little unhinged - but always in ways that were foreshadowed or fit in with previously established rules. The main character won't start to build in power for quite a while, and when she does it will start slow. I love reading about super powerful main characters as much as the next guy, but in this case I'm in no rush to get there. The actual plot isn't introduced until chapter 14, and she doesn't start really gaining power until about chapter 50. This isn't intended to be a dark or depressing story, and Calliope is generally a good person even if it doesn't come naturally to her. I keep it mostly focused on a feeling of exploration and adventure, but I might as well include a section for... CONTENT WARNINGS: (IMO these aren't that bad, but to be thorough...) Discussion of mental illness and bad/abusive parenting (primarily neglect and emotional abuse). Injuries may be described in detail, but in a matter-of-fact way rather than with the goal of being gory or shocking. Discussion of foster care / group homes (mainly just mention of them being a thing, and of various staff or government employees associated with them being unhelpful). People are captured and helpless in a scary situation multiple times, one of which involves torture. While the process of torture isn't described in detail some of the threats or specific injuries that are mentioned might be a problem if that's a specific thing for you.
