Space Core

Chapter 44: Portal!

I looked around my core room, knowing that the human survivor was going to be arriving here in around a week; He had been making steady progress and would probably not hesitate to destroy my core once he arrived. And so, I had to think of an idea for a new floor so that I would be left in peace and not in pieces.

The problem was, that I had absolutely no idea of what to make! I'm not all that creative, and what kind of stuff could be made with my affinity? The worst part was that with my system-virus I had gotten all of the Mana and Mental-stress I could've wished for, but I had no idea of how to use it!

I'd need, like, a whole team of workers to come up with ideas for me(Discord wink, wink.)! It's not like I can really copy stuff... wait, I can copy stuff! I can just go through my memories of stories and video games to make whatever I want, and if another guy from my world arrived, they would be able to recognize everything!

I couldn't imagine just how cool it would be, to actually be inside the video games!

Now, what game to choose... I should probably start with one close enough to my affinity and with a linear storyline to make it easier on myself. I don't think I'd be able to faithfully recreate sandbox games without doing something wrong somehow. I spent a little while on the search for ideas before coming up with the perfect game; Portal(1).

Portal(1) is basically my entire affinity and its heavy use of 'sci-fi' technology would make it interesting simply because of how the people of this world could react; They would probably think it all to be magic, not that I wouldn't use magic to actually make it though.

I quickly moved to one of my test rooms(I put my last one away for nostalgia's sake) and began to work on the most important feature of the entire floor; The Portal Gun. I quickly made a non-functional one based on my memories of the physical version I had seen at one point and started work on the functionality of it. Making it shoot a bright ball of either blue or orange light depending on how it was activated was trivially easy, a ball of mana with either a blue or orange filter made it look quite faithful to the original.

Now, onto the portals. There were multiple parts I needed in order to make them work correctly; First, a way for a portal gun to be connected to its set of portals and not any others, then a way to make the portals connect to each other properly.

The first part was easy, I slapped on some linking runes and was done with it. It was the second part I had problems with. You see, the portals whenever they're without the other one of the pair are fully their own color and don't teleport anything. It took me some time to come up with a good solution to that particular problem.

What I came up with was quite simple, when a portal is created it first 'connects' to another portal showing the full swirling color of the 'closed' portal; Then, once the two of them are present, the portals switch their destinations to each other to fully connect them.

It all worked as intended, but something was bothering me; The closed portals. The non-moving image of the portal made it all look... out of place when seen with one's own eyes. That's why I instead switched it out to a weird liquid I made that I trapped between two pieces of glass to make the surfaces hard enough.

This, of course, created a new problem; How would I stop people from breaking the glass? Oh sure I could use my affinity for that, but then the glass would take on a weird not-glow that would make it off-putting. That's why I made it so that the glass could be broken, and that's also why I decided to make it all really weird.

I made it so that when someone breaks the glass they get sucked into the liquid before leaving them in there for about an hour, of course, the liquid only makes people feel like they're drowning, it doesn't actually drown them. Then after all of that, they get shot back out into a random location inside either the endless corridor or the snake mini-floor.

After that, all I needed to do was add some safety features to make sure no one would be cut into pieces and add a way to pick up stuff.

Now, with the portal gun finished, I had to go on and make the actual game and environment; I made as much of it by memory as I could before adding in Glados's voice lines. The making of the entire place wasn't all that hard as it was mostly just creating some simple rooms, though I did add some custom puzzles of my own to make it not as easy for any reincarnator.

Then, I did some weird shit with Space Mana and my affinity to make it so that anyone who entered would always find themselves going through it all alone without a team.

The result of it all was a rough recreation of the game that would keep people from my core for at least a few weeks if they didn't die before then.

Truly, I was incredibly lucky.
