Dan awakens in an unfamiliar desert landscape, disoriented but filled with excitement. He has uploaded himself into a virtual reality created by Lucid Enterprises, designed to mimic a wild west world. As he stands up, he notices others around him, all newcomers like himself. Together, they walk toward a Welcome Center, a frontier-style building where they’ll receive instructions for their new lives.
Inside, the group is greeted by Claire, an employee of Lucid Enterprises, who explains the basics of their new existence: they have permanently left the real world, their physical bodies gone, and are now fully integrated into the game-like environment of this virtual world. She provides them with tools to start their journey, including a revolver, spurs, and a pocket-sized book with crucial information. Despite the intensity of the moment, Dan can’t help but notice a woman among the group who seems excited yet carries an underlying sadness.
Dan soon learns that not all newcomers will have the same experience. After the orientation, Claire selects Dan and a small group of others for a more personalized introduction. As the rest of the newcomers leave, Dan is intrigued when Claire asks them to stand on randomly assigned numbers. When a table rises in front of him, Dan finds a selection of well-crafted items, including a green bedroll, fine spurs, and a pair of elegant revolvers.
