The Survival of an Inferior

40. The First Flame

A demon digs his fingers into the walls and I blast his head with firepower. He falls to the ground limply.

"No exp?" I mumble.

I try reshooting his head and parts of his eyeballs fly out from his open face.

He is definitely dead...

...

Just by relying on the traps set, we are able to eliminate close to 500 of them. But it is not enough.

The majority of the demons have focused their advance on the kill zone.

"Sharpshooters, continue your firepower on those attacking the walls. Every single mage, Come!" I say.

They follow me to the section of the wall that is broken, near the kill zone.

"On my count, shoot any fire-related offensive spells to the kill zone! If possible, shoot mana-efficient ones like a fireball." I say.

The mages nod. The soldiers manning the three ballistae ready their aim at the kill zone.

The army of demons rushes inside the kill zone. Those at the front have a huge physique and hold up a large shield to protect their comrades behind.

They attempt to charge their way through using brute force.

"Now!"

Hellfire rains upon the poor souls. The aftermath sends loud sizzling echoes and massive vapours of smoke into the air because of the snow, obstructing everyone's view.

The ballistae shoot into smoke on my command even when the soldiers cannot see.

Together with the mage and ballistae, it made advancing in the kill zone extremely difficult. The tall and sturdy terrain of reinforced stones envelops the kill zone preventing them from escaping.

The smoke temporarily clears and reveals the spear shot by the ballista piercing 4 demons at once including one of the giant demons at the front.

The barrage continues as I lift my musket, it's a good time for Rena.

*BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM*

I hope Rena got the signal. For now, we can only defend and buy time for Rena. She needs to be quick.

The onslaught continues. Despite the constant bombardment, the demons still got through.

Radz and the captains at the frontlines immediately go for a strike the moment they appear and decapitated the attacker. Radz grits his teeth as he stares at another soldier's weapon, part of it chipped off from the hardness of the demon's body.

Blue dense mana enwraps many soldiers' weapons before everyone steps forward.

"HAH!"

One or two person blocks or deflects the demon's attack and another swiftly goes in for the kill, slitting their throat. For young demons, their neck is the only area with no scales and normal muscles. Aim there for an easy kill.

Swiftly executing that work in our favour but presents several dangers. The soldiers only had a few days to perfect such a coordinative formation, if even just one person is off...

A demon attempts to strike a group, and the man tasked to block succeeded yet the demon's strength overpowered him and hurls him away.

!!

The formation quickly breaks down as the guy attempting to strike the demon's neck misses. The demon attains a good foothold and swings his arm, slashing the soldier into two.

Lucky for the group, I managed to shoot a clean hole in its nape and the corpse falls.

"Regroup with the backups! Do not lose the high ground at the wall!"

Damn it...Rena, you need to hurry.

I widen my eyes and stare at the battlefield.

---------------

"Full Focus" activated.

---------------

By combining Full Focus and Bullet Hell. I accurately obliterate enemies that got past the defence into Chael.

*BOOOOOOM!*

A cloud of debris and snow explodes in distance away from Chael, the direction where the demons invaded.

That's the cue! Rena started her fight. Some demons become distracted by the sudden chaos from their "home base" as planned.

At this rate, it might seem that we can win...if we have the stamina. Lena continuously pummels enemies mercilessly but her body is hitting its peak when a trail of blood drips from her nose. The other mages are almost out of mana and the sharpshooters are running out of ammo.

Radz singlehandedly parries three demons and slashes his mass of destruction sword across and bashes the three demons into smithereens. His sword style is similar to Rena's since both have the same mentor. The main objective of the swordsmanship is to be as concise and fast as the light yet as elegant as the moon standing out in the void of nights.

"I don't need to worry about Radz," I mumble.

I jinxed it.

The next moment, a gargantuan demon appears out of the kil zone, running with all of his might and rams through the frontline.

!

Radz steps up and appears behind the demon, decapitating it. Nevertheless, it is too late.

That demon broke the majority of formations and the demons start flooding in.

In addition, those desperate bastards started using their allies' corpses as a foothold to get past the water trap surrounding the walls.

Amid all chaos, Lena pokes my arm. I look in the direction she is pointing.

A humanoid figure is floating afar.

"A demon with wings...he is wearing a hat and has black long hair...is that...?" Lena says.

!!

That description lines up with the most loyal and annoying servant of Zerstorung, the ninth son of The Demon Lord.

Then who is Rena fighting right now? He should be the commander!

Damn it!

I quickly reach for the whistle in my pocket to create a piercing screech. It's the signal to retreat.

The soldiers slowly retreat back to the second gate of Chael for escape, directly opposite the broken wall.

"Lena, teleport-"

"Where are you going?" a voice comes from behind.

!!!!

A man with pale skin and red crimson eyes stares into my soul. His long black hair reaches his legs, blending in with the black suit and black hat.

His name is Ruisan.

Ruisan Nen Kimua's aura weakens your presence.

-5% overall stats.

--------------

No sound, no vibration, nothing indicated his presence.

Lena and I simply stood there staring at Ruisan. Escape is impossible.

Ruisan sighs and looks at the massacred demons. "This was supposed to be a simple battle test and experience for the young newbies. Yet half of them were decimated." He says.

His face swiftly snaps and turns 180 degrees, facing me. "It's your fault, right?"

I gulp, staying silent.

Ruisan smile. "It was the right decision to be wary of you; you will be a huge threat in the future. Die," he says.

"Lena-"

*BAM!*

An instantaneous force slaps my body, throwing me across Chael.

*BOOOOOOOOOM!*
