Chapter 1678 Vengeful Spirit

1678  Vengeful Spirit

Ning had never before seen a vengeful spirit at all, but the moment he laid his eyes on this one, he knew for a fact it was this.

The spirit was of a man but with its face twisted to an uncanny degree. It looked as though it was filled with rage. There were burn marks on its body, made obvious by the melting skin on the side of its neck and shoulder. The man had no doubt died in a horrible fire.

But what had caused him to be this vengeful, Ning couldn't know. Talking about such a thing wouldn't work.

What he needed at the moment was an exorcist. Only they could calm down a vengeful spirit to the point where it could be handled. But as things were currently, he could only rely on himself.

Ning feared the Vengeful spirit was going to try and take over his body. It would be difficult for the vengeful spirit to do so, but there was a tiny chance of success and he could only watch it happen helplessly.

However, instead of that happening, the vengeful spirit jumped into Oly's body and soon enough it took over her. There was no resistance there at all. Not fighting back. She practically gave it that body.

'How did it get in her so easily,' Ning thought, confused for a moment. But then, he realized the answer.

'She's an Overtaker,' he thought. Overtakers were weak to spirit takeover and were the most vulnerable ones. However, they could also fight back and tame that spirit.

The woman had chosen to not fight back.

"Hehehehe!" the woman snickered. The spirit snickered. It looked at Ning having completely taken over the woman's body. "Thank you," it said.

Ning frowned, holding the butcher's knife harder. "Why are you thanking me?" he asked.

"Because… you are the only one who has remained awake in a long time before I get to kill you," it said. "Thanks to you, I might just have some fun."

"Yeah right," Ning said. "Like there is any chance of that happening."

"There is."

The spirit suddenly tossed the lantern toward Ning. Ning swung his knife and hit the side of the lantern. The lantern broke, spraying its oil and fire onto the grass next to them.

<Ding!>

<…>

There was a notification that appeared at that moment that he couldn't pay attention to. But the blue hologram covered part of his vision, and with the darkness, it was all he could see.

The grass where the oil and fire sprayed started burning and lighting up the area.

Ning spared a glance toward the fire, hoping at the back of his head that it didn't get too close to the cart. They couldn't let the cart burn.

By that point, the woman was already upon him.

It reached for his knife, trying to swipe away at his hands. Ning tried to pull it back, but the thing tumbled him backward, slamming onto the side of the cart.

Ning struck his back quite badly, causing him to let out a yelp of pain. The knife tossed away from his hand, flying toward the fire.

The woman got off him and went for the knife, but Ning didn't let her. He grabbed her leg, making her fall on her face. He got up, ignoring his own pain, and ran for the knife.

But the woman grabbed his leg as well.

Ning balanced himself quickly, not faceplanting like the woman had. He tried to pull his leg away, but the woman's grip was strong.

He saw the woman open her mouth jaw wide and try to bite his feet. He couldn't imagine letting that happen.

He jumped backward, falling on top of the woman. He hit her in the spine with his elbow, feeling a wave of current pass through his arm at the same time having hit himself in the funny bone.

He pulled his leg away as the woman loosened her grip and quickly spun around before dropping a punch on her face. The woman moved, rolling away before getting up.

She seemed to be in pain, but the spirit did not care for pain. It only grinned the entire time.

"Strong," it said simply. "Are you a soldier?"

"No," Ning said.

"Shame. I like killing soldiers," the woman said rushing back toward Ning.

Ning lowered his body before the woman could grab him and tackled her backward with his one arm out. He slammed her only the ground, but the woman managed to grab him and keep him there.

"Haha!" the spirit shouted. "I got you."

Ning felt the grasp and realized how incredibly strong the woman was. Her strength was unnatural, most likely coming from the spirit. It was stronger than Ning currently was with his Minor Scroll of Strength.

Ning tried to push himself away, but with a single arm, that was harder than he could imagine it to be.

The woman pulled back her head and slammed it onto his head. Ning saw sparks of black and white at that very moment, feeling a terrifying pain flare through his body.

"Haha! Do you like it?" the spirit asked, pulling its head back for another hit.

This time, Ning didn't let it. This time, he went for the headbutt first.

Ning pulled his head back and slammed it onto the woman. He barely felt any pain at that moment. The woman, however, was hurt. Beyond hurt; she was wounded.

Her forehead began bleeding with that one hit.

The spirit itself felt the world wobble for a moment. It did not feel the pain of the body it was in, but it did sense its senses. And this one… it was confusing.

"What… did you…"

It looked up, staring at Ning and his forehead. To its surprise, something metallic flashed from Ning's forehead before it disappeared.

"You… you have a power…" the spirit said.

"Damn right I do," Ning said, finally managing to pull himself away from the spirit. "And now, it's time for you to die."
