Contract Summoner

Chapter 13

We eventually came to a small hill with a large glowing portal that had colors of green and brown. I looked at the others in astonishment, we all knew what these were by now.

Gobling King’s Cave - Dungeon

“That's new, it didn’t look like that with the Infernal Dungeon, nor did the Infernal Wolves den claim to be a dungeon. I don’t like this, guys.” I said.

I looked down to Ten who was playing in the dirt not a care for anything in his face. It’s like a kid. A stupid kid, but still childish.

“The main question is do we go for it?” Leo asked.

“I vote yes, if these guys can leave the dungeon, leaving them to reproduce and cause an overwhelming number is bad.” Crow said.

We all nodded in agreement and started to work out a plan. I opened my menu and took a look.

“Okay guys, my Tactics skill will be the game changer I think. It’s only a 9% increase, but it could make or break this. We take it slow, and we move together. I will keep Wispy and Ten summoned. Ten can lead us, and help avoid possible traps.” I said.

“I will play hard frontliner this time, no weapon, two handed shield. I will have my Shared Pain ability turned on this fight, but still try to avoid unnecessary damage.”

“Lucky is fully loaded, but remember I only get a few shots off before I have to reload, which takes a few minutes. If you get injured come near me after the fight. We prioritize clearing out rooms one at a time, no rushing.” Leo said.

“You guys are taking this too seriously. Which is a welcomed change. I suppose I play the fun role of punching and kicking with fire?”

I smiled at Madison. “Yes, we all know what to do, I will be calling shots so my Tactics skill can kick in. I won’t be using Wispys beam attack unless none of you are near the area of attack. We out level this dungeon, but don’t underestimate it. Worst case, we just run away, got it?”

We stood up and walked over to the portal. Up close I could see the surface looked like water almost. I couldn’t see through the other side, which made the experience more stressful. Crow walked through first, followed by Leo and Madison. I took a deep breath and walked in with Ten and Wispy close by.

The other side was a damp and dark cave. The only light was Wispy, who lit up enough to see without too much worry. The most interesting change was the five icons on the left of my vision. They were little circles with a picture of Leo, Crow, Madison, Wispy and Ten.

“Woah, party HUD!” Crow said a bit too loud.

“Crow what is this?” I asked. Coming out of each Icon was a red and blue bar. Except for Madison who instead of a blue bar, had a yellow one.

“Party interface, the short version is that it allows us to see each other's health, mana, and other information in dungeons, raids, or whatever the game calls it. Also we can’t see five, I only see you guys.” Crow said.

“What? I can see Wispy and Ten though.” I said.

“Ahh, it’s because they are your summons. Typical for casters who have summons, lets you stay up to date on their status as well.”

This is going to be useful, why can’t I see this outside a dungeon? Something else to learn and figure out over time.

I looked over to Ten, “Which way?”

“Where go Not Master Mathew?” Ten said with a big smile.

Fucker, stop calling me Not Master! “What all is there?”

“Food Room, Sleep Room, King Room, Prisoner room, which is also Food Room!”

“Do you have any prisoners?” I asked, hoping they didn’t.

“Yes! We got many food. Other tall ones like Not Master Mathew! Old Master, very happy!”

I looked at the others and we all had the same idea. ‘There are others here we have to save’. “Let's go. Wispy light up the way.”

We started to walk forward in the cave. As we got further, a foul smell emanated and it was horrible.

“Fuck whats that smell? Crow, you see anything?” Leo asked.

“No, but it’s horrible. So the source must be close.”

We came around a corner and found the cave opened up. A few torches lit the area revealing several bodies laying around. More Goblins, all level 1 or 2. In one corner was a huge pile of filth, that made me puke in my own mouth. The retching sound stirred the goblings and soon more sounds woke them all up.

Leo let out what could only be called a war cry and implanted his axe into the closest Goblings head.

Leo dealt 150 Slashing Damage to Gobling. Critical! Weak Spot!

“Kill them all!” Crow said as he got closer to me to act as my shield.

I mentally commanded Wispy to start attacking, while Ten just stood next to me not moving at all. “Ten get in there and fight!”

“Yes Not Master Mathew!” he said as he ran into the fray.

I released a few Ice Bots at any Goblins that seemed close to death. The notifications for damage were pretty one sided. Luckily I could see all our health bars and I truly understood how much more damage Crow could take now.

Gobling dealt 15 Bludgeoning Damage to Crow.

Gobling dealt 31 Piercing Damage to Crow.

Gobling dealt 11 Bludgeoning Damage to Crow.

A few of them had crude spears, but his health bar barely dropped below 10% during the entire fight. Soon it was only three goblins fighting each other. Are they that stupid to fight each other? I made sure none of them were Ten, and fired Wispys Beam Attack.

Wispy Dealt 125 Cold Damage to Gobling.

Wispy Dealt 125 Cold Damage to Gobling.

Wispy Dealt 125 Cold Damage to Gobling.

After that the entire fight was over. Eight dead Goblings laid around us. A quick mission summary confirmed the number and a small bit of experience was gained. Almost level 7, after this dungeon, I will be there for sure!

Nothing went up a stage or rank, so I regrouped as they went over their stuff.

“Alrighty, let’s wait a bit and regenerate health and mana. Anyone need any First Aid?” Leo said.

We all shook our heads. I looked around for Ten and found him near the pile of filth relieving himself. “Ten!”

He turned around with no shame. “Yes Not Master Mathew?”

I covered my face and looked away, “Just. Just finish and find something to use as a weapon when you are done.”

Madison tried not to laugh, while Leo and Crow found something else to keep their attention on. “Guess you need to house train your goblin, Mathew.”

I groaned inwardly and found the cleanest place to sit down while we reseted up a bit. Ten found a crude spear and after a few questions, we knew the next area was actually where the King Gobling should be. After that, would be the kitchen and hopefully an empty prison.

“Alrighty, boss fight! I always wanted to do this since this whole fiasco started.” Crow was practically jumping in place.

“So everyone, given the count of Goblins we just killed, it should be another ten or”

“Yes Not Master Mathew?” Ten interrupted

“Not you!”

“Should be about that many left including the King. Crow, any advice about Goblin or Gobling boss fights?” I finished.

“Typically they can use magic. I doubt this one can do much, also poisons are another thing to watch out for, however for a Level 1 dungeon, I wouldn't expect such a thing.”

“Alrighty, anyone else have advice or a surprise bit of information we want to reveal?” I asked with no response. “Good, now if we can all do me a favor, don’t leave me to die okay?”

A dark joke, but at least Madison smiled a bit at it. Least this time it’s not breathing fire at me.

Crow and Leo carefully walked forward. I kept Ten near me and had Wispy hovering just in front of Madison. The connection between the sleeping room and the throne room had no torches lighting the way.

Luckily the foul smell either was less potent, or I got used to it by the time we got to another open cave room. Torches lined the walls showing everything inside. Standing in a crude formation eleven Goblings stood side by side. Each holding a weapon of their own. Behind them sat a fat and plump Goblings wearing a crude metal crown.

Gobling King, Level 3, Boss

Gobling, Level 1, x8

Gobling, Level 2, x3

The Gobling King sneered at Ten and spat his words, “Traitor! I shall turn you into Gobling Soup! Kill them!”

Crow released his own war cry. “Lerrroooyyyyyyy JENNKKIIINNNSSSSS!”

“That fucking idiot, I am going to punch him!” Madison said running forward with Leo.

The Goblin King's hand glowed a sickly green as he launched a ball of goop at us. It landed right in front of Crow. HA! He missed!

As Crow walked over it, he seemed to slow down considerably, and I could see a status affliction appear next to his icon.

Crow was Slowed by Gobling Goop.

I mentally charged Wispys Beam Attack and aimed right at the Goblin King. Time to take out the Boss first!

As the attack was charged and released, I saw my friends were quickly surrounded. Shit, I didn’t cover them!

I made a mistake. Damage notifications flew across my vision as my friends were attacked over and over. Small numbers flew by, but several of them rose rapidly. My Beam Attack flew toward the Goblin King landing square on him.

Wispy dealt 142 Cold Damage to Gobling King.

“Ten, get over there and help them!” I demanded and started to send Ice Bolts toward the Goblings. I tried to focus the lower leveled ones to kill them faster.

Crow suddenly went down on a knee and was swarmed. No!

Leo threw down his axe and pulled out his shotgun Lucky. Four shots could be heard from it, each followed a Leo yelling.

“Get. The. Fuck. Away!”

Madison's hands and feet were ablaze at this point, each one of her attacks dealing fire damage and igniting the few pieces of clothing these Goblings had.

I spared a moment and looked around to check on our situation. Okay, about half the Goblings are dead. Wait...Where is the Gobling King? I looked around and suddenly felt a pain in my mind.

Gobling King dealt 93 Piercing Damage to Wispy. Critical! Wispy has died.

I looked over to see Wispy dissipate into the air. “No!”

I was mad now, the idea that I can resummon him left my mind for the moment and I sent a mental order to Ten. Attack the Gobling King!

A glance at the others showed they were doing much better and only had four left to kill. Time to end this. I blasted the last two Goblings with Ice Bolts just in time to see Ten get kicked away by the Gobling King.

“Pesky Humans! I had enough of your kind. Killed all my Goblings and turned one against me!” He gathered magic in his hands that started to glow green.

“Crow Shield!” I shouted running toward him.

Crow turned toward the King as Madison and Leo took out the last of the Goblings. “Behind me!”

We all hid behind him and we all prayed his Block skill would hold out on whatever attack was about to hit us.

“Poison Spray!” Gobling King shouted as green sprayed from his hands toward us.

Gobling King dealt 80 Poison Damage to Crow. Inflicted with Poison!

“Ooo, I think I am going to die.” Crow said as he fell forward.

“Madison and Leo, hurry and let's finish him before he attacks like that again!” I said while charging up another Ice Bolt.

Madison was on him quickly, several jabs of fire being thrown in his chest. Right as Madison jumped away to avoid a swipe, Leo brought down his axe.

Leo dealt 50 Slashing Damage to Gobling King.

That was all it took to finish him. The battle was over. Damn, that was so much easier than the wolves!

I looked around and saw Ten was laying on the ground to the side. I could see he was still alive, barely. “Hey Ten, how are you feeling buddy?”

A small groan came from him. “I don’t feel good. Old Master hurts”

I smiled a bit knowing he is going to be okay. Maybe over time, he can become a strong little dude. If not, he can be my new assistant. Speaking of assistants…

“You guys loot the place, I am going to resummon Wispy. I have just enough mana to do it.” Before I could start the summoning, Crow groaned in pain.

“Guys, the poison affliction won’t go away, oh god this feels horrible.” Crow said as he kneeled over.

Leo rushed over to him and pulled out his first aid kit. “I have no clue how to fix poison, but I can try.”

Leo pulled out his water canteen and cut away at Crow’s clothing to the bare skin that got hit with the poison spray. He started to pour water over it and cleaned it up. “We need to get him back to base sooner than later.”

“Too bad we don’t have poison cure spells or items.” Crow said

“Wait, Crow, in games how do you normally get poison cure items?” I said.

“Typically a crafter makes them and you buy them. NPC shops sell them, and on rare occasions you can find them as loot or rewards. Why?”

I didn’t answer him, instead I opened my menu. “Menu, Store”

“Mathew, how do you have a store submenu!” Madison shouted. Again I ignored them.

The shop had several tabs at the top. Weapons, Armor, General Goods, Books, Potions, Se- POTIONS! I imagine it’s in there!

I selected the Potions tab, and scrolled through all that was listed. Potion of Healing? No. Potion of Night Vision? No. Potion of Hair Growth, No? Eventually I found what I was looking for.

Potion of Cure Poison - Common - 33 Credits

I selected it and bought it. The item appeared in my hand. It was a small glass vial with a purple liquid inside. I handed it to Crow. “Drink it. It’s a Potion of Cure Poison.”

Crow looked at it for just a second, then took it and drank. Instantly the effects were obvious as his poison icon disappeared from my view.

“Thanks Mat.” Crow said.

Leo started to put his supplies away, while Madison looked at me like a mother waiting for an answer.

“Okay, so I kinda had credits and a submenu to use them on since the wolf incident. I haven't used it till now.” I informed them.

“That is a shitty explanation, but makes sense. How many credits do you have?” Leo said

“I had 150, that potion cost 33 of them. It has a bunch of stuff in it from what I saw. Which we can all check out after we get credits.” I sheepishly said.

“Well, glad you had them and used them now, rather than hide them.” Crow said standing up.

“Let's finish this Dungeon so we can get more credits to spend ourselves.” Leo said putting everything away and pulling his axe out of the dead Gobling King.

We walked into what can only be described as the worst kitchen ever. A pot over a burning fire in the center, with a crude table that had blood stains all over it. In the corner were a few bodies lying on the ground not moving.

“Oh shit, were we too late?” Madison said, almost choking on her words.

Leo walked over to the bodies to look them over. It was two males and a female. Shit, how long were they down here? The air turned sour at the dead bodies, Leo checked the female last and as he moved her, eyes opened up. A loud gasp of fear and she started to squirm away.

“Get the fuck away! No! No more!”

“Oh hey, relax, no we aren't going to hurt you. We aren't’ the Goblings.” Leo said, putting his hands up to show he wasn’t a threat.

She looked around at us all and when she saw Ten she started to scream more. “There's one of them assholes left! Get him! Fucking bitch!” Her accent came through and I realized she didn’t sound American. European?

“No, that one is with us. Mathew, the one in the robes, controls him.” Leo looked back at me. “Saying it outloud really sounds weird, you know that right?”

I rolled my eyes and told Ten to go back to the main cave so he is out of eyesight. “Sorry about him. Are you okay?”

She didn’t relax, but she stopped yelling. “No, you should kill him and all the others. They killed my friends. They...the things they did to us.” She looked at the ground defeated.

Madison sat down next to her and put a hand on her shoulder, but said nothing. I took the cue and walked away letting them have a moment. I wonder if there is any loot in the main room.

As I started to leave, I heard a cry of pain, followed by a body falling to the ground. In the corner of my vision, I saw Ten disappear from the list of summoned creatures. No!

I ran in the main room, and saw another Gobling standing over Ten. This one was already damaged. A survivor?!

He looked over at me, a spear in his hands coated with Ten’s blood. He ran at me with it screaming.

“You bastard!” I had no summons left, and I didn’t even think in that moment to use magic. I held my staff with both hands, and brought it down with as much force as I could muster.

You dealt 23 Necrotic Damage to Gobling.

It fell to the ground dead. I didn’t trust it, so I hit it again. Then again, and again. Letting out a bunch of pent up emotions I didn’t realize I had. I only stopped when it hurt to lift my arms.

My arms fell to my sides and I sniffed away the tears that started to form. I didn’t really care for Ten that much, but he was my first bound summon. I was just starting to form an attachment and this fucker took him.

I walked over to where Ten laid dead and knelt down next to him. “I’m sorry buddy. I didn’t want you to die. You are better off this way I imagine. Too many wouldn’t like you or trust you, even with me as your Not Master.”

I closed his eyes and stood up looking over all the dead bodies. That undead spell would be useful right now. An army of undead at my beckoning? However, Leo had a point. That’s a slippery slope I won’t go down. Not ever.

Leo came running up behind me, “Mathew! Are you okay?” He looked and saw Ten lying there dead. “Oh shit.”

“Yea, one of the Goblings wasn’t dead. Stabbed and killed Ten. I can promise you, that Gobling isn’t alive anymore.” I looked at the smashed body of the Gobling that killed Ten.

“How's the survivor?” I asked.

“Not good, Madison is doing her best. I think she needs a real doctor, and lots and lots of mental therapy. Even Crow isn’t making jokes around her. It’s bad.”

I nodded. “Soon as she is read, we can leave and head back to the base. Let's look around here for loot and we can check back.”

We rummaged around the bodies and didn’t find anything worthwhile. The Gobling King however had two items that were interesting.

Gobling Crown [Uncommon]

Grants increased reputation to any Gobling or Goblin race while worn.

Gobling Loincloth [Common]

A piece of clothing used to cover the private parts of Goblings.

+2% damage with poison spells.

Leo packed everything. After touching the loincloth, he proceeded to deeply wash his hands. Once we established nothing else was worth taking, we went to check on the others. We found Madison sitting with the other girl. I realized I didn’t know her name so I focused on her.

Maya, Level 3, Unclassed

I looked over to Crow to find him reading one of his M&M books. I decided to go and see what he was looking at. “Find anything useful in there?”

“Possibly, I was looking into a project I wanted to start. Look over the corner, focus really hard.” He pointed at a part of the wall where the stone turned darker.

I looked at it focusing, then what I saw struck me as odd.

Iron Ore, Mining Skill required to harvest

“Mining? Are you looking at how getting materials work?” I asked now, also deeply curious.

“Somewhat, more specifically crafting. I bet we can harvest and make gear. Better gear at that. I also imagine professions and classes are tied into it all as well. Take your class and profession, the two are practically made for each other.” He closed the book and put it away.

“I think I am going to research crafting. If I can make proper shields and real metal armor, my class will become even stronger!”

This was one of those rare times where Crow thought further than 5 minutes, and it was both thrilling and scary. Imagine if he put this much effort into everything. Imagine if I put that much effort into things. I should look into crafting as well probably.

That's when I remembered my writing skill. “Crow, what about Writing, would that be a crafting skill?”

He nodded, “Typically spell caters use it to make magical items such as scrolls or circles.”

Interesting. I looked over at Maya and Madison, both who were standing up. .

“Hey guys, this is Maya. She is ready to leave and head to the base with us.” Madison still had an arm around Maya in a comforting way.

I nodded, “Alrighty, I say we leave this place now. Best to put it all behind us. I don’t care what Captain Franks says, Maya needs help.”

We slowly walked out of the Dungeon. Maya had problems when we saw the dead Goblings, but we made good progress. Once we exited the Dungeon through the green portal, the blue box we were expecting finally showed.

Staves -> Novice 2

I felt the energy of the level up flow through me. That’s a new feeling, why didn’t I feel this last time? Was this another change?

I opened my menu and went to upgrade Tactics while everyone else looked over their own skills and stats.

Skill Upgrade Available: Tactics

Battlefield Presence: You're a voice of command in combat. Tactics bonus is further increased.

Battlefield Overseer: You are the eye that watches every back of every ally. Gain the Party Submenu.

Oh both are so good! Presence would increase the capability of everyone Tactics gets applied to. However, Overseer unlocks an entire new Submenu, and who knows what that could involve!

I was stuck between the two for too long, a hand shook my shoulder. “Hey Mat, we are done, are you ready to go?”

I looked up and saw Leo. “Almost, hold on trying to figure out which upgrade for my Tactics skill to get.”

Fuck it, I will just pick one out later. I closed everything and we made the long trek back to base. Maya was quiet the entire way, but was able to move on her own. After we got halfway there, I decided to phone Captain Franks to warn him about our early return.

“Mathew, this better be good.”

“Yes, we encountered a Gobling Dungeon. My team cleared it out and rescued a prisoner. We are on our way back with her now. We should be back around nightfall. She needs help, good help. She is worse than me when I came back, Sir.”

The phone was silent for several moments. I almost was about to say something when he came back on the phone.

“Get on the road, we have a truck on the way to pick you up. If what you say is true about the Dungeon, we need you here two hours ago. I will explain more when you get here, just have your team understand, you guys might not get any rest.” With that he hung up and I put the phone away.

“Alrighty lets get on the road, they are sending someone to pick us up.”

Leo raised an eyebrow, “I find that hard to believe. Why the change of heart?”

“Because we cleared out a dungeon. He warned us that we won’t have any rest, he also sounded stressed. I don’t think things back at the base are going smoothly.”

We only walked another hour and a half before a large black Humvee came barreling toward us. In the driver's seat was none other than Captain Henderson. “Get in, it’s a shit show back at base.”

I just stood there looking at her, “Why did they send you? I thought you were no longer doing anything related to the Teams?”

“All the more reason to believe how much of a shit show it was back at base. We are on a timer, we can settle shit between us another time.” She opened the doors for the others, and offered me the passenger seat.

I glanced at her one more time before getting in, “Later.” I agreed. The ride there was even more quiet, until Crow broke it.

“So what's going on back at base?”

“That Infernal Dungeon has had creatures leaving it. Red skinned things called Imps. I don’t suppose you know more than Sergeant Thomas on the subject?”

“Probably not, our information is pretty close. Little scrawny things that are winged, pointed tails, and fire can’t hurt them?”

She nodded, “Not scrawny, actually a little fat like pigs. Everything else is right however. The base has been under siege since Team 1 went to investigate it again. They have yet to return as well.”

The severity of the situation hit me, I realized now we are in for the long haul. I just hope I can be enough to help out properly. If the entire base is having problems then it’s really bad.

Once the base was within eyesight I could see several trees were burned down and gone. A lot of the fence was patchwork fixed with sheets of metal or wood. People had a slew of ranged weapons or spells ready to attack anything that is seen.

“It’s like a war is going on!” Madison said learning forward to get a better view.

“Almost, this is just as bad though. An enemy we have no information about. Plus soldiers who are MIA. We are doing fine defending, however we fear there are worse things inside the Dungeon. You are to report to Captain Franks and General Dritzka right now. Be ready.” She parted and we headed inside to the meeting room that we were in just a few days ago.

Brown was there ready with a wheelchair to take Maya away. However when Madison tried to leave as well she put up a fight. “No! I want Madison with me.”

“You are fine Madison, go with her. If we need you, we will find you.” I said.

She nodded and mouthed “thanks”.

Inside was Captain Franks, General Dritzka, Sergeant Thomas, and a few other people including Team 2.

“Mathew it’s good you got here quickly. Captain Henderson, good job on bringing them back swiftly, you are dismissed.” Dritzka said.

She walked out and we all sat down. “So what’s this about imps?” I asked

“Right, well not long after your team left, Team 1 set out to finish leveling up to five. We received a report from them of strange creatures we now know are Imps. Level 2 on average, with a few Level 3 seen every now and then.”

A screen turned on showing a few images of the things. They were exactly how Crow and Captain Henderson described them. Small, pudgy, red, and had a tail and wings.

“They are immune to Fire and resistant to Necrotic damage. However holy damage does around double than normal against them. When I was informed you successfully defeated a dungeon, I wanted you all here to tell me about it.”

I looked at Leo and Crow who both nodded, “Right, our dungeon was set for a party of three Level 1’s. It was a bunch of Goblings, who are identical to the classic Goblins of fantasy, according to Crow anyways.

It took us only a couple of hours to complete it, where there is a dungeon boss. We found Maya at the back, the only survivor of a bunch of prisoners they had. Once we left, we received a reward for finishing the Dungeon.”

“What happened to the portal?” Sergeant Thomas asked.

I shrugged, “It stayed there, but everything was dead when we left.”

“So could the dungeon reset?” Crow’s eyes went wide at that realization. I also realized what that could imply. If they came back, what's to stop them from growing into the horde Crow fears.

I was about to say just that, but then I stopped and remembered what Ten mentioned. They were stuck there and eating each other for a month.

“Maybe not!” I blurted out.

“Explain” General Drtizka said coldly.

“The Goblings were trapped in their cave for a month before they could leave. It lines up with when The System finished synchronization and said the tutorial was complete! There was also Iron Ore in the dungeon. I think that’s for us to harvest after we beat the Dungeon. A sort of, extra reward.”

He nodded liking that answer. “So if we defeat this Infernal Dungeon, the Imps go away, and we can harvest it for materials essentially?”

“If I am correct in my assumption, then yes.” For some reason, that answer just felt correct. I wonder if that increase to Intelligence actually does affect me?

“Excellent, thank you for this insight Mathew. You and your team are to report to the North wall to help defend against the Imps. Take the rest of the evening as rest, as a reward for the information.” General Dritzka said and started to talk among the others while we just sat there.

“Well, that could have gone worse. He even said thank you.” I said. I stood up and we all headed to find Madison and fill her in on what we learned.

We found her with Maya and Doctor Gloria. We were able to pull her away for a few moments to share what we learned, and that she needs to be with us in the morning. I let her stay with Maya since she seemed to really need Madison right now.

I headed into my own room and did something I've been dying to do since we left the Dungeon. “Summon Wispy!”
